Understanding Your Skin

General Skincare Tips

Consulting your physician about your skincare concerns and needs is key to improving the appearance, texture and health of your skin. Your physician will assess your individual situation and advise you on the best practices and products to attain your specific skin health and aesthetic goals. As a foundation of overall skin health, experts agree on some basic tips for improving and maintaining skin health and appearance. These include:

Protecting your skin from the sun by using sunscreen every day (apply every 2 hours, if outdoors, and after swimming or sweating heavily); avoiding peak sunlight between 10:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon; and covering skin with protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats, gloves, sunglasses and long sleeves and pants.

Not smoking. Among its other effects, smoke contains toxins that can dull and dry the skin and smoking causes decreased blood flow to the skin, reducing the amount of oxygen and nutrients the skin gets. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin, which can lead to premature lines and wrinkles and leathery-looking skin.

Pampering your skin with gentle care.

  • Hot water removes skin oils, so use warm, rather than hot water for bathing, showering and washing. Dry your skin by patting or blotting, rather than rubbing. Moisturize while your skin is still damp. Try GlyDerm Hand & Body Lotion 10.
  • Limit face washing to twice a day, and after sweating heavily; use lukewarm, rather than hot water; apply gentle, non-abrasive cleanser gently with the fingertips rather than with scrubbers or washcloths to avoid irritation; and apply moisturizers if your skin is dry or itchy. Try GlyDerm Gentle Face Cleanser.
  • Moisturize your skin using a product formulated for your skin type, consider using a product that also contains full-spectrum ultraviolet (UV) protection.
  • Shave only after wetting your skin and hair and applying shaving cream or gel; use a clean, sharp razor (change blades or discard disposable razors after 5-7 uses); and shave in the direction hair grows, rather than against it. Especially for men with acne, shave lightly to prevent nicks.

Eating a healthful diet, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins and drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin.

Getting enough sleep to allow your skin time to renew itself.

Managing stress, which can trigger skin problems and make your skin more sensitive.
